What is the Rule of Law?

The Rule of Law is about fair play.

The rule of law is one of Britain’s most important values. It’s a shield of fairness that protects everyone equally, no matter who you are or where you’re from

It might sound like something for courtrooms and lawyers. But it affects your life every single day.

How does the rule of law protect me?

It protects your basic rights and freedoms. For example, it helps ensure you can speak freely, practise your beliefs, and live without unfair treatment.

Why should I care about the rule of law? How does it impact me?

The rule of law is the reason your employer has to pay you fairly. It’s why you can challenge a decision that affects you. It’s what stops those in power from doing whatever they want.

Does the rule of law apply to everyone?

Yes. It means everyone follows the same rules. No one is above them. Not the government, not big businesses, not anyone.

Give me more detail, what does the rule of law cover?

Acting within the law – This means that people and organisations must follow the laws of the country. No one is allowed to act outside the rules set by law.

Equality before the law – Everyone is treated the same under the law. No one gets special treatment because of who they are, their job, or their background.

Judicial independence – Judges make decisions based only on the law and the facts. They are free from pressure or influence from government, politicians, or other powerful groups.

Legal certainty – Laws should be clear and understandable so people know what is expected of them. This helps people plan their actions and trust that the law will be applied fairly.

Access to justice – Everyone should be able to use the legal system to protect their rights. This includes being able to get legal advice, go to court, and receive a fair hearing.
